What happens when you “upload” a PDF
On most PDF websites, choosing a file sends it to the company’s servers, where it is processed and stored until a clean-up job deletes it — often after an hour, sometimes longer. You rely on their security while it is there, and on their policy being honest.
A browser-based tool works differently. The page loads the processing code into your browser; when you choose a file, it is read from your device into memory, processed there and saved back to your downloads. The file never travels over the internet.
Which tasks genuinely need a server
Converting Word, Excel and PowerPoint needs an office engine such as LibreOffice. Converting a web page needs a full browser engine on the server to load that page. Rewriting a PDF with encryption, or editing existing text while reusing embedded fonts, also relies on server software.
Merging, splitting, rotating, reordering, compressing images, converting images to PDF and back, watermarking, numbering, signing, redacting, unlocking with a known password, OCR and comparing can all be done in a modern browser.
How to check a tool yourself
Load the tool page, then switch off Wi-Fi or mobile data and try it. If it still works, it isn’t uploading your file. On a computer you can also open the browser’s developer tools (F12 → Network) and watch whether your file is sent anywhere when you press the button.
