Terms of Service
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are the agreement between you and PDFSwing, Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India (“PDF Swing”, “we”), the operator of pdfswing.com and api.pdfswing.com (the “Service”). They are written in plain language on purpose. By using the Service you agree to them; if you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
The agreement
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy (which is incorporated by reference and explains exactly how each tool handles your file), form the entire agreement between you and us about the Service. If you use the Service on behalf of a company or other organisation, you confirm you are authorised to bind it, and “you” includes that organisation.
Who may use the Service
You must be old enough to enter into a binding contract where you live (18 in India and most countries). If you are younger, you may use the Service only with the permission and supervision of a parent or legal guardian, who agrees to these Terms on your behalf. You must not use the Service if you are barred from doing so under applicable law.
What we provide
A free, no-account collection of 26 PDF tools: merging, splitting, organising, rotating, compressing, converting to and from Office formats and images, HTML to PDF, watermarking, page numbers, cropping, editing, signing, protecting, unlocking, redacting, comparing, repairing, OCR and PDF/A conversion. Seventeen tools run entirely inside your browser; eight upload your file to our server for processing; Edit PDF is hybrid. The tool table in the Privacy Policy is the definitive list.
The Service is provided free of charge, without a subscription, without watermarks on your output, and without attribution requirements. We may introduce optional paid features in future; nothing that is free today will be moved behind a paywall without notice.
Beta features
Tools marked Beta — currently Edit PDF — are still being improved. They work, but edge cases exist: unusual fonts, complex layouts and scanned pages may not edit cleanly. Keep a copy of your original file before using a beta tool, and check the output before relying on it for anything legally or financially important. We may change, limit or remove beta features at any time.
Your files and content
- You own your files. Nothing you upload or process becomes ours. You keep every right you had.
- Limited licence. For server-processed tools only, you grant us a licence to receive, store temporarily, process and return your file solely to perform the operation you requested. The licence ends automatically when the file is deleted, which happens as soon as the result is sent to you (or within 6 hours for an Edit PDF session). We claim no other rights.
- No training, no sharing, no human review. We do not use your files to train any model, do not share them with anyone, and no person at PDF Swing opens them.
- Your responsibility. You confirm that you have the right to process every file you use with the Service, and that doing so does not violate any law, contract or third-party right.
- Keep your originals. The Service returns a new file; it never modifies the file on your device. Always keep the original.
Acceptable use
You may use the Service for personal, educational and commercial purposes. You must not:
- Process files you do not have the right to modify, or use the tools to forge, falsify or backdate documents, signatures, certificates, statements or identity papers.
- Use Unlock PDF, Redact PDF or any other tool to circumvent protections on content you do not own or are not authorised to access, or to strip rights-management information from copyrighted works.
- Upload malware, or content that is illegal to possess or distribute where you or we are located, including child sexual abuse material, which we will report to the relevant authorities.
- Use HTML to PDF to fetch pages you are not permitted to access, to probe or attack other systems, or to fetch content in breach of another site’s terms.
- Access the Service by automated means (bots, scripts, scrapers, bulk API calls), resell or white-label the processing backend, or attempt to bypass rate limits, file-size limits or the private API key.
- Probe, scan or test the vulnerability of the Service without our written permission, interfere with its operation, or attempt to access the admin dashboard or any non-public endpoint.
- Mirror, frame or reproduce the site or its content, or use our name or branding to suggest an affiliation.
- Use the Service in any way that is unlawful, harmful to others, or that would expose us to liability.
We may block traffic, IP addresses or files that we reasonably believe breach these rules, with or without notice.
Fair use and technical limits
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Maximum file size for server-processed tools | 100 MB per file |
| Rate limit for server-processed tools | 60 requests per minute per IP address (a 429 response means wait a moment and retry) |
| Edit PDF session lifetime | Deleted on close; hard limit 6 hours after last activity |
| Browser-only tools | No server limit; practical limits depend on your device’s memory |
| Contact form | A small number of messages per connection per hour |
These limits exist so one visitor cannot slow the Service for everyone else. We may adjust them without notice. Automated or scripted use is not permitted and may be blocked.
Tool-specific notices
Sign PDF
Sign PDF places a visual signature (drawn, typed or uploaded image) onto the page. It creates a simple electronic signature. It does not apply a certificate-based digital signature — such as a Digital Signature Certificate under the Indian Information Technology Act, 2000, a Qualified Electronic Signature under eIDAS, or a PKI signature that Adobe Reader shows as “certified”. Whether a simple electronic signature is legally sufficient depends on your jurisdiction, the type of document and what the other party accepts. Check before relying on it for regulated documents.
Redact PDF
Redact PDF has two modes. In the default Secure Flatten mode each page is re-rendered as an image with the marked areas burned out, so the underlying text is genuinely gone (and the page is no longer text-searchable). In Overlay mode a coloured box is drawn on top of the page and the original text remains inside the file — it is a visual cover, not a removal, and should not be used for documents you will share. In both modes it is your responsibility to review the output before sharing it, including any metadata, bookmarks or attachments that may not have been covered by your selection.
Protect PDF and Unlock PDF
Protect PDF encrypts with the password you choose; we never store that password and cannot recover it. If you forget it, the file cannot be opened. Unlock PDF only removes protection from files whose password you already know or which have owner-only restrictions; you must have the right to do so.
HTML to PDF
When you enter a URL, our server fetches that page. You are responsible for the URLs you submit and for the content of the resulting PDF. Pages that require login, block automated browsers or rely on interactive content may not render as expected.
Conversions, OCR and Compress
PDF is a diverse format. Conversions to and from Word, PowerPoint and Excel, OCR text recognition (in any language), PDF/A conversion, repair and compression are best-effort: fonts, layouts, tables and scanned text may not be reproduced perfectly, and compression may reduce image quality. Always review the output.
Intellectual property
The design, layout, code, text, guides and branding of the Service are owned by PDF Swing and protected by copyright and trade-mark laws. You may link to any page. You may not copy, mirror or repackage the site or its content, or remove any notices.
The Service is built on open-source software including pdf-lib, pdf.js, Fabric.js, Tesseract.js, LibreOffice, Ghostscript, OCRmyPDF, Chromium and pdf2docx, each used under its own licence. Nothing in these Terms limits your rights under those licences, and nothing grants you rights in that software beyond what its licence provides.
If you send us feedback, ideas or suggestions, you agree we may use them without restriction or compensation, and you confirm they do not include anyone else’s confidential information.
Third-party services and links
The Service uses a small number of third-party providers (hosting, CDN, web fonts) listed in the Privacy Policy. Our guides may link to external websites; we are not responsible for their content or practices. A website you ask HTML to PDF to fetch is not part of the Service.
Reporting abuse, copyright and takedown
Because we do not host user files (server-processed files are deleted within seconds, or within 6 hours for edit sessions), there is normally nothing to take down. If you believe content on our own pages infringes your copyright or other rights, or if you believe the Service is being used to violate the law or these Terms, send a notice through the contact page with the topic “Legal / takedown”, including:
- The URL of the material and a description of the right you believe is infringed.
- Your name, contact details, and your relationship to the rights holder.
- A statement, made in good faith, that the use is not authorised, and that the information in your notice is accurate.
We act on valid notices in line with the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, the US DMCA and equivalent laws, and we acknowledge within 72 hours. Our Grievance Officer, Manish (PDFSwing, Agra, India), is reachable through the same channel. Knowingly false notices may expose you to liability.
Security researchers: if you find a vulnerability, please report it through the contact page (topic “Report a bug”) rather than exploiting it. We will not pursue good-faith research that respects user privacy and does not disrupt the Service.
No warranty
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, free of charge, without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, non-infringement and uninterrupted or error-free operation, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not guarantee that any file will process correctly, look identical after conversion, or be suitable for submission to any portal, authority or counterparty. We may take the Service offline for maintenance or otherwise at any time.
Nothing on the Service is legal, financial or professional advice. Guides describe general procedures; requirements of exam portals, banks and government bodies change, and you should check the current requirement yourself.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, PDF Swing and its owners, staff and suppliers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, files, profits, revenue, goodwill or opportunity, or for missed deadlines or rejected submissions, arising from or related to your use of, or inability to use, the Service, even if we were advised of the possibility.
Our total aggregate liability for all claims relating to the Service in any 12-month period is limited to the greater of (a) the amount you paid us for the Service in that period (currently nil) and (b) INR 1,000 (about USD 12).
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded by law, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or statutory consumer rights that apply where you live.
Indemnity
You agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless PDF Swing and its owners and staff from any claim, loss, liability, damage or expense (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your files, your content, your breach of these Terms, or your violation of any law or third-party right in connection with the Service.
Changes, suspension and termination
We may modify, add, limit, suspend or discontinue any tool or the whole Service at any time, with or without notice. We may suspend or block access for anyone who breaches these Terms or creates risk or legal exposure for us. You may stop using the Service at any time; because there are no accounts, nothing needs to be closed. Sections that by their nature should survive (your files and content, intellectual property, warranty, liability, indemnity, governing law, general terms) survive termination.
Governing law and disputes
These Terms and any dispute arising out of them or the Service are governed by the laws of India, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Subject to any mandatory consumer-protection law that applies where you live, the courts at Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India have exclusive jurisdiction. Before starting formal proceedings, you agree to contact us first and give us 30 days to resolve the issue informally.
If you are a consumer in the EU/EEA or the UK, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of your country of residence, and you may bring proceedings in your local courts. The EU Online Dispute Resolution platform is available at ec.europa.eu/consumers/odr.
