How to Convert a Scanned PDF to Editable Word (What Actually Works)
- PDF to Word detects scanned pages and runs English OCR automatically, so you get editable text.
- For Hindi or Marathi scans, run OCR PDF first (it has Devanagari models), then convert the result.
- Clean, straight scans at 300 DPI give far better text than phone photos at an angle.
- Expect to fix a few characters and some formatting — OCR is very good, not perfect.
- Conversion runs on our server over HTTPS; files are deleted right after the Word file is sent back.
Why scanned PDFs don’t convert like normal ones
A PDF exported from Word contains real text: every character is stored with its font and position, so converting back to Word is mostly about rebuilding paragraphs and tables. A scanned PDF contains only an image of each page. There is no text to extract until software reads the letters from the picture — that is OCR.
That is why some converters hand you a Word file with one big picture per page. It looks right but you can’t change a word.
English scans: one step
Open PDF to Word and add your scanned PDF. The converter checks whether the pages contain real text; when they don’t, it runs English OCR on our server before building the Word document. You download a .docx with editable paragraphs.
Open the result and skim it once. Names, numbers and dates deserve a second look, because a smudge or a stamp over a line can change a character.
Hindi and Marathi scans: two steps
The automatic OCR inside PDF to Word is English-only. For Devanagari documents, first open the scan in OCR PDF and choose Hindi or Marathi (or English + Hindi for mixed forms). OCR PDF runs in your browser with dedicated Devanagari models and produces a searchable PDF with a real text layer.
Then convert that searchable PDF with PDF to Word. Because it now contains Unicode text, the Hindi or Marathi arrives in Word as editable characters, not boxes or gibberish.
How to get the cleanest result
Scan at 300 DPI in greyscale. Place the page straight on the glass and close the lid, so there are no shadows or curved lines near the spine. If you are using a phone, use a scanner app’s document mode, which flattens perspective and boosts contrast.
Avoid scans with heavy highlighter, stamps across text or very small print; OCR reads them less reliably. If a page came out crooked, straighten it with Rotate PDF before converting.
What to expect in the Word file
Paragraph text converts well. Tables usually come through as tables, but merged cells and borders may need tidying. Headers, footers and page numbers sometimes become normal text at the top or bottom of each page. Signatures, photos and stamps stay as images.
For forms you need to fill in rather than rewrite, it is often quicker to type onto the PDF directly with Edit PDF instead of converting it.
Privacy
Converting to Word needs our server, because it uses LibreOffice and a PDF-to-Word engine that browsers don’t have. Your file travels over HTTPS, is converted straight away and is deleted as soon as the Word file is returned. OCR PDF, used for Hindi and Marathi, runs entirely in your browser.
What to do next
For Hindi or Marathi scans, make the PDF searchable with OCR PDF before converting.
English scans can go straight into PDF to Word, which runs OCR automatically.
Straighten sideways pages with Rotate PDF first — OCR reads upright text best.
Only need to fill in a few blanks? Type directly onto the PDF with Edit PDF instead of converting.
Starting from a photo? Turn it into a PDF with JPG to PDF, then convert.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to run OCR before converting to Word?
Not for English scans — PDF to Word runs English OCR automatically. For Hindi or Marathi, run OCR PDF first and then convert the searchable result.
Why does my Hindi text look like boxes in Word?
The PDF either had no text layer or used an old non-Unicode font. Run it through OCR PDF with Hindi selected, then convert the new PDF to Word.
Can I convert a photo of a document to Word?
Turn the photo into a PDF with JPG to PDF first, then convert it with PDF to Word. A straight, well-lit photo gives much better text.
How accurate is the OCR?
On a clean 300 DPI scan of printed text, very accurate — usually only a handful of characters need fixing. Handwriting, stamps and faint photocopies are harder.
Is my scan stored on your server?
No. It is processed and deleted as soon as the Word file is sent back to you.
